In recent years, the number of people testing for HIV has rapidly increased in Eswatini. However high levels of HIV-related stigma mean many people, particularly men and young people, are reluctant to know their status.

Sub-Saharan Africa: Testing coverage 2000-2015

People are very receptive to community-based testing. It can also reach nigher numbers of men. In 2016, 98 countries reported on community-based testing programmes, many of them in sub-Saharan Africa, where there are large numbers of first-time testers and people living with HIV are being diagnosed at earlier stages of infection.

Sub-Saharan Africa: Differences in testing and getting results by age & gender

People who are most at risk of HIV are not accessing HIV testing in high enough numbers. There is also a discrepancy in testing between genders, with men less likely to test for HIV than women, across all regions.
