WHO Test & Treat policy and change in ART uptake

As of 2018, 84% of low- and middle-income countries, and all of the UNAIDS Fast-Track countries, had adopted a test and treat policy. If current commitments are kept to, by the end of 2020, 92% of all low- and middle-income countries will have adopted a test and treat strategy.These changes have contributed to a significant increase in the number of people on ART, which increased by 4.5 million in just two years between 2015 and 2017: from 17.2 million to 21.7 million.

Sub-Saharan Africa: Testing coverage 2000-2015

People are very receptive to community-based testing. It can also reach nigher numbers of men. In 2016, 98 countries reported on community-based testing programmes, many of them in sub-Saharan Africa, where there are large numbers of first-time testers and people living with HIV are being diagnosed at earlier stages of infection.

Sub-Saharan Africa: Differences in testing and getting results by age & gender

People who are most at risk of HIV are not accessing HIV testing in high enough numbers. There is also a discrepancy in testing between genders, with men less likely to test for HIV than women, across all regions.
