In 2019 it was estimated that 920,000 people were living with HIV in Brazil. Levels of HIV are higher in the south and southeast of Brazil.

In 2019, 330,000 people were living with HIV in the Caribbean and 2.1 million people were living with HIV in Latin America. There were 13,000 and 120,000 new infections in the two regions respectively.

In 2019, 77% of people living with HIV in Latin America were aware of their HIV status. Of those who were aware, 78% were on treatment. Of those on treatment, 88% were virally suppressed.

Seven countries and island states in the Caribbean have eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Montserrat, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

New HIV infections among children (aged 0-14 years) have declined across Latin American and the Caribbean, down from an estimated 4,700 in 2010 to 3,500 in 2017.

Brazil PrEP use

In 2018, 9,000 men who have sex with men, sex workers and transgender people are being offered PrEP free of change through Sistema Único de Saúde, Brazil’s national health service. Within five years, the programme hopes to reach 54,000 people from key populations.

Caribbean: distribution of new HIV infections among key population groups

Homophobia and the ‘machismo’ (strong/aggressive masculinity) culture are common throughout the region and sex between men is highly stigmatised. As a result, large numbers of men who have sex with men do not identify as homosexual (or bisexual) and have sex with women as well as men, forming a 'bridge' population.
