You can test for HIV at any time. If you think you might have put yourself at risk it's good to get a test right away. However, HIV can take time to show up in a test. This is called a window period and is something you might want to ask your healthcare advisor about if you are taking a test.
There are lots of different places that you can go to get an HIV test. Wherever you go the process is quick, painless, confidential and almost always free.
There are different types of HIV test, all of which work in slightly different ways. A healthcare worker will be able to explain which test you are taking and what you have to do.
