The structure of HIV

Knowing the structure of HIV helps you to understand how it works, why the immune system finds it hard to detect, and how antiretroviral drugs can treat it. As a virus, HIV relies on our immune system to sustain itself and make copies. It's by interrupting these processes that we are able to reduce the amount of HIV in a person's body.

People starting on PrEP by country (April 2018)

As of June 2018, 46 countries had regulatory approval for PrEP. Of these, 39 had included PrEP within their HIV policies, a 40% increase from 2016, mostly in Europe or Africa. However, this does not mean that PrEP is available in all parts of these countries and to everyone who needs it.

There is no risk of passing on HIV if your doctor has confirmed that you are undetectable (or virally suppressed), you continue taking your treatment and attend regular viral load monitoring appointments. Undetectable = Untransmittable.

New infections in children

Successes in preventing mother-to-child transmission mean that 2 million new HIV infections in children have been prevented since 2000. To reach the UNAIDS targets for 2020 we must reduce annual new infections to 20,000 by 2020.
