This year, South Africa became the first African country to host the FIFA World Cup. In the month long tournament 64 matches of World Cup football were played in nine cities across the country.
In the same month, an estimated 23,000 South Africans died from AIDS.
HIV and AIDS in South Africa
Since the first case of AIDS was identified in South Africa in 1982, the country has been devastated by the global AIDS epidemic. Today over 5.7 million South Africans are living with HIV and around 250,000 South Africans are dying each year as a result of AIDS. An estimated 70,000 babies are born with HIV each year and the country is home to an estimated 1.4 million AIDS orphans.

AVERT's projects in South Africa
AVERT is helping people affected by HIV and AIDS in South Africa through the following projects:
Sisonke – Eastern Cape Province. Sisonke has trained 140 volunteers to provide home based care in the community for those who are sick as a result of AIDS. Sisonke also helps the community to look after the children orphaned by AIDS.
Mpfuxelelo - Mpumalanga Province. Mpfuxelelo has reached 13,382 people in the last 3 months through HIV and AIDS peer education at Tintswalo hospital.
Tholulwazi - KwaZulu Natal Province. By providing paralegal assistance, Tholulwazi is helping to secure a sustainable income and better quality of life for hundreds of families left destitute by the AIDS epidemic.
