back to top World AIDS Day 2012
To help us to continue our vital work, please consider making a donation. AVERT will continue to raise awsreness of HIV and AIDS every day. For World AIDS Day 2012, we ran several awareness campaigns as below:
The world’s largest AIDS Awareness Ribbon
We displayed
the world’s largest AIDS awareness ribbon on World AIDS
Day at halftime during the Liverpool versus Southampton Premier
League match. We hope this will raise global awareness of HIV
and AIDS.
'Reflections of the Epidemic' feature series
Reflections of the
Epidemic are our series of articles by guest
writers, raising awareness of the many issues related to HIV
and AIDS.
Get Plugged In Campaign
AVERT

Hold a ‘Red’ Day: Red is the colour of the AIDS awareness ribbon – why not wear red for a week, have a red party, make red fairy cakes, wear a red ribbon to dinner, or wear red to work?
Walk for AIDS: Make this the year you decide to take on that circuit or go for a walk with a difference. Get sponsored to take the challenge, whichever your preferred sport or activity.
Sports match: Compete in a charity sports game between your colleagues, friends or local team.
Colleague challenge: Encourage your workplace to fundraise for World AIDS Day. Maybe you could hold a staff quiz or raffle, or even dare to try a sponsored no caffeine week!
Music event: Make a noise about AIDS this December and use your passion for music as a way to fundraise for AIDS work. Get the family over for some karaoke or even hold a battle of the bands.
Celebrations: How about giving a present with a difference? You could make donation in support of people living with and affected by AIDS as a Christmas, birthday or anniversary present.
Come dine with me: Decide on your menu, get together with friends, then score each other in secret! Get people to donate to take part and see how much “prize money” you can make.
Video games. T.V. or film marathon: Organise a movie night and charge for entry or snacks, endure films you hate in exchange for a donation or get sponsored to play video games for hours!
It’s a dare: Are you brave enough to do something truly daring? A sponsored head shave? Giving up a guilty pleasure like chocolate or cigarettes? Take the plunge this World AIDS Day
Remember, there are many reasons why this work needs to continue:
- An estimated 14.8 million people need access to HIV/AIDS treatment. Only 54% of them are receiving it. This is still too low.
- 45 countries still restrict people living with HIV from travel and stay.
- Less than half of young men and women have correct knowledge about HIV transmission and prevention.
- More than 2,400 young people become infected with HIV every day.
- Millions of people need better access to accurate HIV and AIDS education.
- 34 million people live with HIV/AIDS worldwide, there isn’t universal access to education and treatment, and stigma and discrimination is still a problem.
