World Blood Donor Day, 14th June 2013, raises awareness of the need for safe blood and blood product supplies. Whilst many countries are achieving this goal, some are not, risking the transmission of HIV and other blood-borne viruses.

Voluntary and unpaid blood donors are essential for sustainable and safe blood supplies, upon which many people rely. Where volunteers do not donate, blood shortages are common, placing the lives of patients at risk.

"Give the gift of life: donate blood" is the WHO slogan for this year's World Blood Donor Day.
