John, a young person from the local community, visited the AVERT funded voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) clinic at the Umunthu Foundation. He complained of pains when passing water. The VCT counselor discovered that he had contracted a sexually transmitted infection (STI) after having unprotected sex. The VCT counselor explained to the young man that there is a strong link between STIs and HIV, because both infections are contracted when a person is involved in a risky behavior, such as not using a condom during sexual intercourse. A person who contracts an STI can have a increased chance of contracting HIV. After counseling, the young man was provided with a referral form to an STI Clinic where he was treated. In the photo above John is telling his story to participants at the 2011 International AIDS Candlelight Memorial [IACM] on the grounds of Umunthu Foundation on 19th May 2011.
