What is community fundraising?

Community Fundraising simply means getting together as part of a group to raise money for a charity or cause. It usually refers to people working together to create a fundraising event, spread the word and raise money for a cause or charity they are passionate about. The more people that are involved in fundraising, the more skills and contacts you can share, which means you're likely to raise more money. If you're interested in fundraising for AIDS, community fundraising is a great way to raise money for the HIV/AIDS charity AVERT.

Anybody can get involved with community fundraising! People often fundraise as part of a school, university or college, a church group, in a club or society, or even with colleagues, friends and family. Employers or local businesses might be able to help with corporate fundraising and could offer support to your team if you explain that your event is in aid of a charity.

The key ingredients of a successful community fundraising event are lots of imagination and lots of people. A fundraiser can involve any activity you like. It can range from a sponsored swim to planning an overseas adventure – the sky's the limit.

Organising a fundraiser of any type sometimes necessitates spending money on set-up costs. There are also legal requirements that need to be taken in to consideration as you may need permits or licenses, or a health and safety assessment. However this can all be fun and rewarding if you work together with your team and can be a great excuse to learn new skills.

Local authorities are used to people organising fundraising events and will be willing to help you meet their requirements as easily as possible.
