AIDS fundraising for teachers

back to top Helping your students to fundraise for AIDS in school

Encouraging your students to raise money for AVERT is a fantastic way to get them thinking about topics that might already be part of their cross-subject curriculum.

  • The AIDS epidemic
  • Personal, social and health education (PSHE)
  • International development
  • Global citizenship
  • Human rights
  • Healthcare
  • Science subjects

Organising a fundraising event is also a great way for your pupils to develop key skills, such as team work, time management, budgeting and planning.

It's also a means for students to research the work of charities and how they manage services that respond to the effects of AIDS.

AVERT runs community programmes in sub-Saharan Africa, an education website and an information and advocacy service. Students might also be interested in case studies about any one of our specific work areas. You can read more about the work of AVERT here:

Our fundraising team is also happy to correspond with any students who are undertaking research on the work of AVERT.

back to top Fundraising themes and ideas

There are so many ways that your school could organise educational and engaging fundraising events, and AVERT would be happy to support you or your students with each one! Some tried and tested fundraising ideas are:

  • poster design competitions for World AIDS Day
  • school quizzes
  • themed assembly
  • fancy dress or non-uniform
  • sponsored sports events like a fun run
  • cake sales
  • wearing 'red' - the colour of the AIDS ribbon

back to top AVERT can support your school fundraising events

AVERT can provide all kinds of support for your school and students if you decide to hold a fundraiser for the AIDS work of AVERT. We can reward your students with certificates that recognise the impact their fundraising has had on our work. We're also able to provide a whole range of fundraising materials for your school, such as t-shirts, badges, stickers, flyers and red ribbons.

With your permission, our fundraising team would also love to highlight the efforts of your students by mentioning their event or activity on our website and our facebook page. Let us know your ideas as we'd be happy to discuss how we can support your schools' activities.

World AIDS Day

Each year, December the 1st is World AIDS Day and schools across the world hold events and use it as a means to educate on HIV and AIDS.

Concentrating your schools' activities around World AIDS Day means you can coincide a global event with your own school. It also helps to provide a context for pupils on the many discussions about AIDS that might be happening on the T.V, radio or internet around that time.

If you're planning an event for World AIDS Day, why not work with AVERT to help raise awareness of HIV/AIDS within your school? We can provide fundraising resources and information, as well as the free, printable material that's on our website.

Please get in touch with our fundraising team to discuss your ideas as we'd be happy to help and support your school activities.

back to top Using AVERT.org as a teaching resource

Please take a look at our HIV and AIDS education pages, which contain information on how to address HIV/AIDS and sexual health in schools. We also have a page of suggestions for lesson plans that tackle some key classroom topics like attitudes to HIV/AIDS and transmission FAQs.

There are also some pages on the AVERT website which can be used to support classroom discussions on HIV/AIDS and sexual health, such as What is HIV? and What is AIDS?

Games and quizzes:

AVERT.org contains games and quizzes with a HIV/AIDS education purpose. These could be used as part of an exercise in class or the questions could inform a tailored quiz. You can even print our quizzes and hand them out around the class.

Our pages:

AVERT.org has a wide range of comprehensive and detailed information on the global epidemic, HIV, AIDS and sexual health. Each page can be printed and distributed for free.

Every effort has been made to ensure that information on AVERT's site is presented in a way that is easy to understand and neutrally phrased. Any new words or scientific terms are explained simply and linked to other pages for further information.

AVERT provides a source of comprehensive sexual health and HIV/AIDS information for a range of audiences, and as a result, educators may feel that not all site content is suitable for all students. AVERT recommends that teachers establish appropriate material for classroom use, with regard to the legislation that informs the types of sex education permitted in their school. AVERT is not responsible for the type of content that is selected for distribution in a classroom.

Our media gallery:

AVERT's media gallery is full of photographs, videos and graphics that could help stimulate a discussion on HIV and AIDS. Our own videos are exciting educational resources that could be used in the classroom as a great way to enhance a lesson.
