AVERT's Overseas Partners in sub-Saharan Africa
We work closely with our charity partner organisations, and involve them in other areas of AVERT's work as much as possible. We rely on donations to maintain these partnerships and help continue their important work.
AVERT's current partners
Umunthu Foundation in Malawi provides a one-stop healthcare service for its local community affected by HIV and AIDS. 20,000 local people can now access HIV testing, CD4 count testing and antiretroviral treatment at the Umunthu clinics, without having to make the long journey to the regional hospital.
Umunthu have tested 48,500 people for HIV since 2010, with 9,355 of these people now aware of their HIV-positive status. Anti-AIDS youth groups also provide HIV education and awareness to local young people both in and out of schools.
Sisonke provides training, mentoring and education to different groups of people affected by HIV and AIDS in Grahamstown, South Africa. One of those groups most affected are the elderly, many of whom are now the primary carers for children who have lost their parents to AIDS.
Sisonke’s Gogogetters network provides these elderly women with knowledge, counselling skills and home-based care qualifications to enable them to get back on their feet. Farming training, legal support and small funds enable people living with HIV and those affected, to mitigate the impact of the epidemic.
AVERT's previous partners
Home-based care (HBC) is presented as a solution to the tremendous strain that is put upon the healthcare system in South Africa, because of the numbers of people needing HIV-related medical attention.
Between 2010 and 2013, AVERT co-funded a research project entitled ‘Care in the Home Study’ (CHoS). The objective was to investigate the quality of home-based care in South Africa, and the relationship between the care worker, primary caregiver and client (people living with HIV). The study identified a lack of funding for HBC and unreliable pay structures for care workers. Indeed, the provision of HBC could be better utilised.
