American virologist, Dr. Robert Gallo. On April 23rd 1984 it was announced that Dr. Robert Gallo of the National Cancer Institute had isolated the virus which causes AIDS. However, the Pasteur Institute in Paris also claims rights to the discovery of HIV, and in 2008, Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier of the Pasteur Institute were awarded a Nobel Prize for their discovery of HIV.
