The virus that causes AIDS is called HIV, which stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV is a retrovirus that measures around 100-150 billionths of a metre (4 millionths of an inch) across. It is too small to be viewed with an ordinary microscope, but can be seen clearly with an electron microscope.

There is no cure for AIDS. However, treatment with antiretroviral drugs can delay the onset of AIDS and allow someone to live with HIV for many years without becoming ill. This usually means taking a combination of three or more drugs at least once a day.
