HIV prevention involves teaching people how the virus can be transmitted and how they can reduce the risk of this happening. It also involves making it easier for people to practice safer behaviour - for example by distributing condoms or syringes.

If used consistently and correctly, condoms, including female condoms, are highly effective at preventing pregnancy and some sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Other contraceptive devices, such as the contraceptive pill, are only able to prevent pregnancy.
